Tasseography - reading the patterns left by tea leaves or coffee grounds - is one of those practices that sounds like superstition until you actually sit with a cup and try it. Then something shifts. Where Tasseography Comes From

Reading coffee grounds is documented in the Ottoman Empire from at least the 16th century, spreading from the Levant through North Africa and into Eastern Europe and the Balkans, where it remains a living household practice today. In Greece and Turkey, a coffee reading after a meal with friends is not unusual - it is part of how people navigate the day. The grounds are not consulted in the abstract; they are read by someone who knows you, for a question that is real.

The basics of the practice: drink your coffee (Turkish-style unfiltered coffee produces the best grounds - espresso powder residue works too), hold a question in mind, and when you finish, swirl the cup three times counterclockwise and invert it onto the saucer. Let it sit for five minutes, then turn it upright and look at what the grounds have formed on the inside of the cup.

How to Read the Symbols

The cup is divided into three zones. The rim (the top edge) represents the near future - the next few days to a week. The middle section corresponds to roughly a month ahead. The bottom of the cup reads the distant future or the deep background of the situation.

Symbols near the handle are closest to you personally. Symbols opposite the handle relate to other people or external circumstances.

The symbols themselves are not standardized the way tarot cards are - different traditions assign different meanings to the same image. But some readings are nearly universal: a bird in flight means news or travel; a ring means commitment or completion; a snake is either warning or wisdom depending on its position; a mountain is an obstacle that is either passable (small) or formidable (large and clearly defined). Trees and plants generally point toward growth; broken lines toward interruption.

The more you read, the more you develop your own symbol vocabulary. This is not a flaw in the system - it is how it is supposed to work. Your unconscious recognition of images contributes to the reading.
