The Four Core Shapes

Left curl: the smoke bends toward the left. In most capnomantic traditions, left is associated with the past, the subconscious, and caution. Something from behind you is still active in this situation. A left curl does not mean stop - it means look back before you step forward.

Right curl: the smoke bends toward the right. Right is the direction of forward movement, but also of external forces. A right curl often means the situation is being shaped by outside influences - other people, timing, circumstances you do not fully control. What is coming toward you matters as much as what you are doing.

Scattered: the smoke disperses without forming a clear column or curl. This is the most complex shape to read. Scatter signals that the situation is not yet settled - too many variables, too many possibilities, no dominant direction. It is not a negative sign. It is a sign that this is the wrong time for a definitive answer. Wait. Let things develop.
